Introducing Ask the HR Expert!

RRLC is excited to announce its newest member service, Ask the HR Expert. This service is modeled after the very successful Ask the Lawyer service. RRLC, along with several other Councils, has retained HMN Resources, LLC, owned by Holly Nowak, for timely input on employee relations, research, and human resources document and policy development.

If you attended the ESLN New Sick Leave Law webinar on 1/13, then you have already been introduced to Ask the HR Expert and had a chance see Holly in action, alongside Stephanie Cole Adams (Ask the Lawyer).

Ask the HR Expert will work in tandem with Ask the Lawyer — if a question come into one service but is a better fit for the other service, it will be transferred. Please remember, if you are a school or public library, you are required to check with your library system first since they may already have the information you need. Also, if we feel your question has already been answered by either the Ask the Lawyer or Ask the HR Expert RAQs, we will direct you to those. If your inquiry is highly specific to your institution, we may request that you contract one-on-one with either Holly or Stephanie depending on the appropriate service.

Like Ask the Lawyer, this valuable service is currently provided at no cost to our members. That said, Ask the HR Expert is a pilot service, and we will evaluate its usage throughout the year to determine if it becomes a regular service of RRLC.

This year’s theme, “Living Through History: Movements, Milestones, and Moments of Impact,” will explore history in our everyday lives.

Area institutions will present Lightning Talks highlighting their unique collections and be available to discuss the archival treasures they preserve during the Virtual Archives Fair event on December 15 from 2-3pm. In addition, you can browse through highlighted Online Collections at any time.

Whether you are interested in history, genealogy, primary sources, or enjoy learning, this FREE event will introduce you to our area’s special collections, archives, libraries, and historians.

History in Black & White: Why Rochester Needs an Archive of Black History & Culture
As Rochester reckons with its history of white supremacy and racism, the past provides important lessons that can help explain how we got to this moment. Unfortunately, most of the archival materials housed in the community’s cultural institutions tell history through the white middle class lens that has predominated in traditional historical narratives. In order to develop a more inclusive understanding of the past, we need to ensure that the historical record reflects ALL of the city’s residents and their experiences by collecting materials that document the experiences and viewpoints of underrepresented people. Toward that end, the Rochester Public Library is working with community partners to interrupt racism by establishing an archive of Black history and culture. Presented by Christine L. Ridarsky & Antoine A. McDonald from the Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County.

Celebrating Women’s Anniversaries in 2020
2020 is the year of Susan B. Anthony’s 200th birthday and the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment. Our department had an exhibit (Women Running Rochester) set to open in mid-March on these anniversaries and much more. The exhibit never opened to the public and is now online. My talk will cover the creation of the exhibit, some of the women it features, and its transition to an online exhibit. Presented by Autumn Haag from Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation at the University of Rochester.

Playing with Others Thanks to Parker Brothers
Peruse any American family’s board game collection and you’re bound to see some of the biggest hits from Parker Brothers: games such as Monopoly, Clue, Risk, Sorry!, and Trivial Pursuit. But, what do you know about the company itself, founded by George S. Parker more than 130 years ago? This talk will summarize the history of the Parker Brothers company using original materials from the archival collections at The Strong. You’ll learn about George S. Parker, the early days of the family company, its hit products, and of course, the impact of Monopoly on the games market for decades to come. Presented by Julia Novakovic from The Strong’s Brian Sutton-Smith Library & Archives of Play.

Listening to the Past: Oral History in the Digital Commons
Since the advent of sound recording, people have made use of it in a variety of ways. One way in which it was very relevant for archivists and historians is interviews with a variety of people, often retirees or “the first” to do or achieve something in their Town or institution. In some cases, the interviews were left on formats that have become obsolete. They can be difficult to impossible for researchers to utilize. Adding them to your institutional repository, with an accompanying transcript, makes these items far more accessible and useful to researchers. Presented by Pam O’Sullivan from the Drake Memorial Library at SUNY Brockport.

Coordinated Collection Development Aid (CCDA)

Ten RRLC academic library members receive New York State Coordinated Collection Development Aid (CCDA) each year. CCDA is administered on behalf of the New York State Library by the Empire State Library Network Councils. The CCDA program promotes regional coordination of collection development in academic libraries by providing annual grants based on enrollment to public and nonprofit colleges and universities that meet certain conditions. These conditions include constitutional eligibility to receive State aid, membership in a reference and research library resources system (library council), and full participation in interlibrary loan and other resource sharing programs.

RRLC academic libraries have developed this coordinated collection development plan for the region, designating subject area responsibilities for each participating library. RRLC assists member academic libraries in completing the online application, collects ILL statistics annually, and asks each library to verify its collection areas/strengths annually.

Special Project Grant

RRLC offers special project grants to members who want to undertake a project that will help their organization fulfill its mission; projects with a potential impact on the larger RRLC community are given first priority. The Special Project Grant is for small projects of no more than $5,000.

Grant Application Period is now open! Applications are due 12/09/2024. The total number of grants awarded will be based on the available funding.

ELIGIBILITY
Membership: All applicants must be dues paying members of RRLC. See our website for a list of member libraries. NOTE: Individual school and public libraries, while not dues paying members of RRLC, are considered members through their library system. You must be authorized by your organization to submit an application on behalf of your organization.

SPECIAL PROJECT GRANT REQUIREMENTS

Available to Full and Affiliate members; Individual members are not eligible to apply
Individual school and public libraries may apply with approval of the system director
Project funds may not be used to pay current staff salaries; funds may be used to add hours to part time staff, hire additional staff, or pay contractors/consultants
RRLC may publish information about the project and its results on our web site and social media channels

RRLC will award grants based on the available funding and the project’s potential impact on the institution and the larger community.

GRANT TIMELINE:
October 21, 2024: Application Period is Open
December 9, 2024: Application with required documentation is due
January 16, 2025: Board of Trustees makes final award selections
January 20, 2025: Grant awardees notified this week
January 31, 2025: Grant acceptance letters due; award payments sent
July 31, 2025: Mid-year progress reports due
January 1, 2026: Project completion; final reports due

The 2024 Special Project Grant winners are:

French Road Elementary School – Ocean Exploration
The goal of the project is to deepen students understanding of the ocean and its animal inhabitants. Students will research ocean zones, habitats and the animals in those habitats. They will work as a group to create an animal that could live in the habitat’s environment. Students use a graphic organizer to record facts about their habitat and to make their zone poster for technology. The students will use Book Creator to make a digital book entry about their animal. Books, supplies, and knowledge gained through this project could be shared with others in the school community.
Gates Chili High School – Library Makerspace
This project will transform a vacant cafe within the library into a dynamic collaborative makerspace. This makerspace will serve as a hub for creativity, providing students in grades 9-12 with the resources and environment needed to explore, innovate, and collaborate on various projects. This will serve as a space where teachers, students, and community members can come together and work on projects.
Literacy Rochester – Traveling Digital Classes within the Monroe County Libraries
Through this grant laptops will be purchased that will then be used to provide digital literacy classes to libraries throughout Monroe County. The goal of these traveling classes is to help community members learn digital skills through class topics such as Basic Computer Skills, Internet Skills, MyCare & MyChart, Resume Building, etc.
Frank DiMino Casa Italian Library at Nazareth University – Frank DiMino Casa Italiana Library Cataloging
The Frank DiMino Casa Italiana Library Cataloging Project is the result of a collaboration between the Frank DiMino Casa Italiana and the Lorette Wilmot Library. So far more than 1,750 books in the collection are cataloged (primarily by students). The goal of this collaborative project is for all 5,000 (plus) items in the Casa Italiana’s current library collection to be made accessible via an online library catalog where members of the Nazareth and greater Rochester community can find books and DVDs specific to Italian history and culture that they can check-out for both academic and personal use.
Fraser Hall Library, SUNY Geneseo – Noteworthy: a picture book and educational text about belonging
This grant will support SUNY Geneseo along with author Dr. Meredith Harrigan in the publication of a multi-faceted, open access, illustrated book project about personal journey, belonging, inquiry, applied learning, and a girl searching for her lost smile in a community park. The project challengers readers to critically examine the concept of belonging and how people can support belonging-related needs in various spaces.
Pine Brook Elementary School – Supporting Literacy for our ENL Learners
This grant will help to build a collection of books to support ENL (English as a New Language) students as well as celebrate and promote diverse cultures and languages. The grant will enable the library to purchase books in needed primary languages such as Ukrainian, Arabic, Spanish, and Dair which will in turn support and welcome students in their new setting.
Rochester Institute of Technology Archives – Exploring the Urbanarium: A Deep Dive into Rochester’s Visionary Past
This grant will help to fund a multi-phase public history initiative aimed at critically examining and celebrating the significant history of the Urbanarium in order to revive the spirit of the original projects from the 1970’s, engage communities and foster dialogue around urban development, education, and the socio-cultural fabric of Rochester.
Smt. Gnanapoorani Madhvanath Memorial Library – SGM Memorial Library Cataloging Initiative
This grant will help fund the cataloging and preservation of the SGM Memorial Library’s extensive collection of rare and hard to find books related to Hinduism. The projects goal is to broaden the reach of culturally significant resources and promote educational opportunities for patrons.
