The stereotype of the librarian often conjures the image of an uptight lady in a frumpy outfit with glasses on the tip of her nose ready to shush whispering children. Diving into representations of librarians in pop culture, however, reveals a wide variety of characters beyond these one-dimensional depictions. In this exploration, we will touch on classic stereotypes and then turn our main focus to those that break the mold and celebrate the many ways the figure of the librarian manifests in pop culture both in the past and present. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and make comments throughout the presentation!

Presenter Maya Rook is a historian, artist, and writer living in Rochester, NY. She holds an MA in American History from the University at Albany and seeks to better understand the human mind and heart through the practice of history. As a college instructor and public speaker, Maya strives to blend critical insight with humor and empathy in her investigations of the past.

This event will be held in Zoom and is open to RRLC members. Registration is required.
