New and Upcoming Kids Books

Hundreds of books are published every month. But who has the time to read so many books?

In the form of book talks, Charlie Kelly will highlight new and upcoming culturally relevant elementary books which include picture books, chapter books, novels, graphic novels, poetry, biography, and nonfiction titles. Ms. Kelly has attended webinars by School Library Journal, American Library Association, BookList, and numerous book publishers focusing on culturally relevant books. She also visits bookstores, public libraries, and reads Advance Readers Copies from publishers. To be classified as culturally relevant, a piece of literature needs be authentic, realistic, and uphold a culturally conscious ideology and message (Gray, 2009; Hefflin, & Barksdale-Ladd, 2001; Inglebret, Jones, & Pavel, 2008; McNair, 2010; Yoon, Simpson, & Haag, 2010). Culturally relevant books mirror different aspects of identity (e.g. race, setting, beliefs, cultures) so students/patrons can imagine themselves in the story. By having culturally relevant books in libraries, students/patrons can choose books where they see themselves in the books. The books will also help the students/patrons expand their understanding of others in this multicultural world.
