Date: November 30, 2016
Time: 8:30 am – 3:00 pm
Description:
“The meaning of ‘knowing’ has shifted from being able to remember and repeat information to being able to find and use it” (National Research Council, 2007). Therefore, to be prepared for collegiate level writing and writing at work, students must be able to gather, comprehend, evaluate, synthesize, and report information and ideas. It is critical for students to be able to engage in an inquiry-based process for reading and writing. In this interactive workshop, participants will have the opportunity to learn about a student-centered, inquiry-based, iterative process for research and writing in all content areas. Participants will explore how rich texts and well-crafted text-dependent questions drive the close reading process and avenues for inquiry.
The first portion of the workshop will focus on building the background knowledge necessary for facilitating the research and writing process in the classroom setting. The second portion of the workshop will encourage participants to work together to create an inquiry-based research and writing project to be implemented in the 2016–2017 school year. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be encouraged to work with Geneseo faculty and staff to schedule a visit to the Milne Library at SUNY Geneseo to assist with the research process.
