Bristol Valley Theater, the Finger Lakes’ premier summer theater is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the women’s suffrage movement in New York State by devoting our entire 2017 summer season to plays and musicals by female playwrights. Through a partnership with the National Susan B. Anthony Museum and House and the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, we will engage in a summer long celebration of women’s history and women’s rights through activities within the theater and at our partner sites.
At the theater itself, we will present a summer season of six professionally produced plays and musicals all written by female playwrights. The issue of gender parity in the American theater has been a topic of much recent discussion within the field. American Theatre Magazine reports that while 80% of new plays submitted for production were by female writers, less than 24% of all plays produced professionally in the United States are written by women. By dedicating an entire season to female artists, we hope to shine light on this issue but also to showcase the extraordinary diversity and creative power of the female dramatic voice.
